OPAMP BOOST W/ EFFECTS LOOP SPARKLE

The Box o' Later is Ryan Colgan aka The Tone Geek's take on a super-rare John Mayer boost pedal that was designed by Alex Dumble and never released to the public. Not a one for one copy because the original circuit is unavailable for tracing and only gut-shot pictures exist, but the concept is pretty straightforward: solid boost circuit plus a built-in effects loop with control over each stage.

Being the DIY gentleman that he is, Mr. Colgan posted all the tone info and schematical pow-pow online to anyone interested or able to build the PCB that he offers through his website. But what if you can’t build or don’t want to? Well, since we had already built the project (the curiosity was killing our cat) and Ryan wasn’t selling a finished/completely built version, we asked if he was cool with us doing a small, limited run for anyone who can’t build and he was cool with that, so if you’ve been tone-chasing through a mysterious body-like wonderland looking for that illusive missing piece, this might complete the John Mayer shaped puzzle for you.

Designer’s description:

Inspired by the Dumble a box later, this is my take on the circuit. It's an active loop for pedals/amps, a signal attenuator, a unity buffer, and a +24db clean boost.

We took what Ryan created and housed it in a pedal board friendly 125b sized enclosure with side in/out jacks, a top mounted DC jack, added a ground lift switch for the feedback loop, and a relay based true bypass no-click style foot switch. The input and output impedance are controllable through internal trim pots with testing pads to make getting a correct reading easier. There’s also a trim pot to set the gain of the first stage if you find it’s too hot or under powered which can be really helpful when pairing with finicky vintage fuzz circuits that struggle to hit stage volume.
