The Sam Ash Fuzz Stainer is a rare fuzz circuit that is believed to have been released sometime in the early 70’s. Recently, online fuzz enthusiasts have unearthed and compared several different vintage units and have discovered they were not all built the same, and we aren’t talking about a few swapped part values. Some units have a different topology all together. Our tribute is based on the mark II version and NOT the GERMS schematic that is readily available online.
These sound mean. Think primitive gated fuzz with a unique spit profile and mid-frequency focus. The initial pick attack creates a sort of splatty tone that quickly smooths out as the note is sustained. It basically sounds like a dirty window sill; grimy.
So how does the Fuzz Banger differ from the mkII Fuzz Stainer? Sound-wise, it doesn’t, but the functionality has been improved. First off, the jacks are setup normally. Also noteworthy is the no-click foot switch and its ability to function momentarily if held and released. We added an LED indicator and moved the tone control to make top mounting the in/out and DC jacks possible as well. It’s pretty much the modern pedal board friendly version of the Sam Ash Fuzz Stainer mkII.
